A group of friends, who all lived around Kyriakou Square – nowadays known as Victoria Square – decided to create a football team for the love of the game, for their love and passion for football. It was a difficult era but their efforts and willing more than enough; Kolomvounis, Petas, Glykofridis, Stathopoulos, Synodinos, Rigopoulos, Stamatopoulos have been the leading persons that realized the project and officially founded Atromitos in the month of May, 1923. Vaggelis Stamatis, a math teacher and a former official of the Greek Football Federation has been the person named responsible for Atromitos administration. With his knowledges and experience, Vaggelis Stamatis, who had been involved in the past as a football official in the Board of Directors of Panathinaikos, he helped the Victoria square group of friends to make their dream come true. The new team was named “Atromitos” (which means “fearless” if translated in english). Two years later, the official statute of Atromitos was ready; in 1924, the official petition for the new team’s creation has been accepted and the official sign of the Statute took place in 1925. Atromitos FC possesses the 14th number of Registration in the Greek Football Federation catalogs. The first team ever to be registered in the Greek Football Federation logs had been Panathinaikos, followed by AEK, Apollon, Dafni, Athinaikos, Astir Zografou, Goudi, Olympiada (Orfeas Egaleo), Aris Petroupolis, AO Pagkratiou, Ellinorossikos, Arion Pagkratiou, Attikos and Atromitos. A well known doctor, originating from Asia Minor, Iosif Chouroukchoglou was named first President of Atromitos; the new team’s home was the football pitch of Panellinios at the Pedion tou Areos and later on the Panathinaikos home pitch. In 1925, in another neighbourhood of Athens, in Peristeri, the club Aspis was founded; later on, the football club Neos Astir. In 1932, Nikolaos Epioglou and Iosif Chouroukchoglou, took a big decision; Atromitos was moving to another home and find its own fans. In 1933, Atromitos moved to Peristeri, a city that was full of pigeon houses and thousand of refugees who had reached Athens after the Catastrophe of Smyrna. In 1934, Peristeri become a Town with its own Municipality. The merge of Atromitos Athinon and Asteras was realized without any problems; Asteras, an independent club, offered its symbol, the star, as well as its colors, blue and white; on the other hand, Atromitos kept its name. So, in 1932-1933 season, the new team of Atromitos Athinon (Atromitos Athens) appeared featuring the star as a symbol, blue and white as its shirt colors and Peristeri as home pitch. Antonis Migiakis and Ypofantis were the first Atromitos managers (coaches). The first Atromitos football players were Gkotsis (goalkeeper), Tzouvalis, Bananos, Kagetzis, Louris, Foskolos, Georgiou, the Papanikolaou bros, Giannopoulos, Chatzikalis, Stifis and many more, some of which are only known by their nicknames. Seventy three (73) years later, a second merge marked Atromitos FC history. A second merge that offered Atromitos FC new perspectives and new visions. Atromitos FC, back in May of 2005, was playing in Division C, with many economic difficulties and a quite uncertain future. It was then when one of the most reliable persons interacting in the Greek football, Mr. George Spanos, owner of the fuel company “ETEKA” appeared in a sudden and following the steps of Nikos Epioglou and Iosif Chourouktsoglou made one of the greatest moves in the history of Peristeri athletics and sports. Chalkidona FC, a model team of the Greek First Division, has been merged with Atromitos FC. In such a way, Atromitos was included in the “elite” of the Greek Football after 24 years. Atromitos kept its symbols, its colors, its home pitch and sailed away for new challenges. A big circle in the Atromitos history ended and a new one began. This new circle may be a product of a merge, but, it is always the historic team of Atromitos FC which nurtured many generations of citizens of Peristeri. George Spanos, after negotiating with the former Atromitos President Tasos Papanikolas and the mayor of Peristeri Andreas Pahatoutidis, took the great decision and became the new great leader of Atromitos FC. The merge of Atromitos and Chalkidona was officially announced on May the 31st, 2005. In the event’s panel George Spanos, Andreas Pahatouridis, Tasos Papanikolas and Spyros Magginas sat side by side; the emotion was clearly menifested in all faces, but especially marked in George Spanos’ face. Andreas Pahatouridis handed an Atromitos FC shirt featuring the number “1” and “Spanos” surname written in the back side. “We’ve made our first tranfer” he declared. The teams of Chalkidona and Atromitos has been “flirting” since the end of 2003; it was then when a meeting between Tasos Papanikolas and George Spanos first took place. On September 2004 both sides communicated once more, sticking mostly to economic details. At the end of February \/ beginning of March 2005 the project moved one. George Spanos made a market research in Peristeri and after all the positive messages he received, he decided to proceed with the merge. The mayor of Peristeri, Andreas Pahatouridis, had been also involved in the historic merge; George Spanos back then declared: “I had many offers from various teams, at that period of time, even from teams out of Athens. But, in the end, I decided not to leave and I took the Atromitos proposal because of his huge dynamic and the love of his fans”<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Athens, Greece, early 1920’s.
