Rethymno Cretan Kings was originally established in 1965 as A.G.O. Rethimno, by Giannis Chalkiadakis and Antonis Vistakis, who became the first President of the club. The basketball section was founded by Tasos Triantafyllos, professor of physical education and basketball coach in 1986. The team commences its efforts in the local championships (local 2nd division) ESKA B category in 1986-87 and stays there for ten years. In the year of 2000 it becomes Champion of the 1st local division (ESKA A category) and earns the ticket of participating in National Divisions. After that, a succesful course of rises in divisions was ment to follow, as a direct result of hard work and right choises of manpower, conducted by the coach Stergios Koufos. During the season of 2004-05 Rethymno BC becomes champion of the B Basketball League (National Semi professional 3rd Division) and rises division (A2), where it gains the third position. In 2007-2008 Rethymno plays in the 1st Division and the same year reaches the finals of the greek Cup against PAO, which is its best achievement so far. Rethymno has stabilized its presence in the Basket League, where it plays constantly since 2011. After being named Rethymno Aegean, the club changed its name to Rethymno Cretan Kings in 2015. Rethymno, apart from being a highly promising team, promotes moral exaltation and athletic ideals in general. The philosophy of fair play and well being in the courts is taught to its fans, who were acknolwdged with the prize in ethics by ESAKE. When Rethymno was asked to contribute to charity idols projectand immediately accepted the invitation with great willingness.
