Thanasis Karagounis was born on the 25th of September 1991 and plays for PEC Zwolle in the Dutch Eredivisie. He started his professional career in 2008 with Fokikos, making 30 appearances in the Football League 2 and scoring 4 goals. On summer 2009 he joined Atromitos. He was part of the Atromitos team who were runners-up of the 2010\u201311 Greek Cup, losing 0\u20133 to AEK Athens, and also runners-up in the 2011-12 Greek cup, where they lost 2-1 at extra time against Olympiakos. In January 2014, he signed a 2,5 years contract with PEC Zwolle. He made his debut with the club in January, 18th as a substitute in a 1-2 home loss against Vitesse Arnhem. He scored his first goal with the club on May 3, 2014 in an away loss 2-1 against Twente. At the end of the year he won his first title, as his team won tha Dutch cup, beating Ajax 5-1 at the final. Thanasis Karagounis made 7 appearances for Greece under-19 and 9 appearances for the Greece under-21 team. Although he shares the same surname as Giorgos Karagounis, the former captain of the Greek national football team, it was revealed at an joint interview of both players that they are not related
