The Pan-Cretan Association of Parents and Friends of Children with Cancer “Iliahtida” was founded in 1992 in Heraclion from sensitive citizens. The purpose of the Association is the financial and psychological support of children with cancer and their families from all over Crete as well as the nearby islands. “Iliahtida” is a great, warm, constant and loving hug both literally and figuratively. Figuratively Iliahtida\u2019s hug is expressed through three main supportive structures which have been organized by the above association in recent years. The first one concerns the placement of a Psychologist in the hospital on a daily basis, so that children and parents have daily psychological support. Moreover, our psychologist is the link between Iliahtida and hospitalized children and their parents, daily serving a two-way communication resulting in prompt resolution of the everyday practical problems. The second support structure is the organization of an exceptional volunteer group whose members visit the hospitalized children in the clinic daily, in a play-room that has been fully renovated by “Iliahtida”. Moreover the association equips the play room with gifts, constructions and materials for the recreational activities of the children. In this way the volunteers give a touch of joy and optimism to children and parents daily. The third structure which has a very supportive value is the construction of a hostel which was inaugurated recently and is intended for the free hosting of children and families who come from distant parts of Crete. In addition, the children’s hostel \u00a8Iliahtida\u00a8 enables all families who are hospitalized to daily use the common kitchen to prepare meals and a fully equipped free of charged launderette to clean their clothes, needs which due to a long stay in the clinic were thorns in their daily lives before the guest house. Additionally \u00a8Iliahtida\u00a8 1. Undertakes the costs of outpatient examinations and movements in foreign and internal hospitals for specialized surgeries 2. Cares to solve practical problems and needs associated with the stay of the young patients and their families in the clinic 3. Supports financially families and cover as many needs as possible 4. Takes care of the proper functioning of the hostel every day 5. Organizes in the play room of the clinic recreational festivities on a regular basis (Christmas – Easter – Halloween ) and birthday parties for all children 6. Supports the work of medical and nursing staff of the clinic 7. Contributes significantly to the improving of the residence conditions of the young patients with clinical equipment maintenance of nursing rooms 8. Organizes informative and art events Generally the main axis around which \u00a8iliahtida\u00a8 organizes and implements its actions and objectives is the psychological uplift of children since it is known that the good psychology plays an important role in the positive treatment of cancer.
